Chevelle Michael, a senior at Newport High School and a Level III Cosmetology student at CPACTC, is building a future shaped by passion, family influence, and the support of a welcoming salon community. Her decision to attend CPACTC came from watching many family members thrive after choosing the same path. She wanted the same strong start in life and valued the chance to earn a meaningful education without financial burden.coop may 2026

Cosmetology has always been close to her heart. Chevelle grew up styling hair, doing makeup, and painting nails for her sisters and nieces. She loved the way a simple beauty service could lift someone’s confidence and make them feel renewed. That early joy naturally guided her toward a career where she could bring that feeling to others every day.

Once she earned her cosmetology license, Chevelle felt ready to take the next step and join the workforce through CPACTC’s Cooperative Education Capstone Program. She wanted to strengthen her skills, gain real world experience, and begin earning money in the field she plans to pursue long term. Her opportunity arrived during the career fair, where she connected with the team from Joseph's Vintage Barbershop and Salon. When she visited the barbershop and salon, she immediately felt welcomed. The team treated her like she already belonged, and the atmosphere felt warm and supportive.

Joseph’s Vintage, owned by Nick Ortega, has been a dedicated partner of the CPACTC Cosmetology program. Ortega has served as an Occupational Advisory Committee member for eight years and is known for his commitment to helping students grow into confident professionals. His shop has become a place where young cosmetologists can learn, practice, and feel supported as they take their first steps into the industry.

Chevelle now works as a nail technician and assists in the salon. She focuses on keeping her tools clean, using proper techniques, and giving each client the best results she can. The beginning felt overwhelming as she adjusted to the fast pace and high expectations of a professional salon. With time, patience, and guidance from the staff, she has grown more confident and now works independently most of the time.

What Chevelle appreciates most about her workplace is the sense of family. The team treats one another with kindness and care, creating an environment where everyone feels supported. That sense of belonging has strengthened her commitment to her career and to the people she works with.

Chevelle hopes to build a full client book within the next year. After graduation, she plans to continue working full time at Joseph’s Vintage Barbershop and Salon, growing her skills and deepening her connection to the community that helped launch her career.
